Berbice : Rhonda Da Silva, a 24-year old pregnant woman drowned after the boat she was travelling in capsized in the Berbice River last evening, in the vicinity of the Kwakwani crushing plant.
According to reports, boat carrying Da Silva, her husband and daughter capsized near a bauxite tug and barge. The woman’s husband and daughter were rescued by workers of the Bauxite Company, however, she could not have been rescued in time and drowned. The body has since been recovered and is at Kwakawani mortuary.
The tug’s captain and crew are with the police assisting with investigations.
Officials of the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) are expected to visit the accident site today while Minister of Human Services and Social Security Jennifer Webster has been informed of the mishap.
Officials of the bauxite company have already met with the relatives of the deceased to render assistance.
