Georgetown : The Ministry of Public Works continues preparation in anticipation of the current high tides and another expected to begin on May 22. It has also been closely monitoring the present springtide period, but thus far there has been no overtopping.
During an interview today with the Government Information Agency (GINA), Chief River and Sea Defence Officer, Kevin Samad stated that the ministry does not anticipate any overtopping during this spring tide period.
Samad said that the Ministry will be conducting some drainage work in communities along the East Coast Demerara to improve the drains in order to keep the water flowing to the pumps.
He said that the sandbags are an emergency measure which will be packed at the seawall in order to avoid flooding. Samad pointed out that residents who would like to take additional precaution will be provided with sandbags.
