Georgetown : The recent pronouncement by the Surinamese President Desi Bouterse to challenge the decree on the New River Triangle did not come as disturbing news to President Bharrat Jagdeo who reiterated the pact the two countries made on strengthening relations.
“He fought off attempts to resuscitate the issue as a focal point of our relationship. He insisted that we should continue with cooperation, working together on many other fronts without them giving up their claim,” President Jagdeo said speaking to members of the media.
President Bouterse was reported telling the National Assembly that his country will be revisiting the issue of claim on the New River Triangle with a friendly settlement approach based on international law.
The issue over territorial claims was settled by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) ruling that brought the two countries to the arbitral tribunal and the peaceful resolution of the maritime issue.
A citation from the tribunal stated that “as a result of the award Guyana now has undisputed title to the area where the incident occurred. The injury done to Guyana has been sufficiently addressed.”
The ruling allowed CGX to resume operations that were delayed since the year 2000 when the issue intensified.
Guyana and Suriname have since put their difference aside and forged a new partnership agenda to further concretisation of relations.
