Georgetown – President Bharrat Jagdeo has called for a strong masculine environment for discussion of issues affecting males in society and lamented the negative consequences of the absence of the male role model.
The President was at the time speaking at the launch of the Men’s Affairs Bureau (MAB) by the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security to enable and encourage men to fulfill their true potential as fathers, husbands parents and role models.
“There is some behaviour in our society that may not have been tolerated in another society… but those influences do exist and therefore we don’t want every young male child to start thinking that that is ok,” President Jagdeo said.
Acknowledging that Guyana will maintain the reputation of respect for people’s rights to freedom of belief and expression, the President’s concern about the many influences on males in society led to his call for a community of men who can influence discussions on male problems and solutions.
The numerous young boys that society has lost to negative vices such as crime were among the other pressing concerns highlighted by the Head of State.
“We recognise also that our boys are more susceptible to the influence of those who are hell bent on the path to crime and often because the pressure of our society is still on them to acquire things to provide things in relationships, then they feel that they have to get those resources at any cost,” President Jagdeo said. The bureau adds to the list of services under the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security to support vulnerable groups in society. It offers men the opportunity to gain knowledge on issues relevant to their gender such as anger management, conflict resolution, understanding emotional needs of spouses, self esteem and gender equality.
