President calls on GECOM to accelerate declaration of preliminary results

Georgetown : President Bharrat Jagdeo expressed his disappointment in the tardiness of the process and implored the commission to announce the preliminary results “immediately.”

In an address to the nation, the President said “By now all of the political parties that contested the national elections know the results because all of the parties were in polling stations, they had signed statements of poll that they all received after the counts were done… so it’s incumbent upon them to accelerate the declaration of preliminary results at least so as to remove this unease and uncertainty that a lot of our citizens face.”

The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) issued a call for GECOM to make public immediately, or as soon as possible, preliminary results of the elections and had also called for a recount of 48 polling stations in Region Four.

The latter call was  retracted as some had expressed the opinion that such a move would delay the announcement of the preliminary results but President Jagdeo disagreed.

By declaration prior to its announcement of the results but according to President Jagdeo their delays have resulted in numerous strategies to preempt the results, including whisper campaigns.
