Georgetown : President David Granger accepted an invitation to become patron of the St. John’s Association of Guyana, during a meeting with its members at the Ministry of the Presidency. The visiting delegation was led by Chairman of the Association, Mr. Vibert Parvatan and included Dr. Jose DaSilva, Mr. Clive Bowman and Ms. Manjula Bridgemohan.
President Granger urged the team to draft a plan of their urgent needs and their short to medium-term plans so that he can work with the Ministry of Finance to see how best the Government may be able to assist the Association it its programme of work.
The St. John’s Association has its origins in the St John’s Ambulance Brigade, which is dedicated to the teaching and practice of medical first aid and the provision of ambulance and community volunteer services in a number of countries around the world. It was founded by a noble Order of Chivalry in the 11th century to serve those injured in wars. Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is recognised as the sovereign head of that Order.
Since the establishment of the Guyana chapter in 1933, the Association has trained thousands of persons, including joint services ranks, in first aid, home nursing, patient care, ambulance training and disaster preparedness. The Association has divisions in Linden, Upper Demerara-Berbice (Region 10) and Berbice, East Berbice-Corentyne (Region Six).
