President Granger undergoes chemotherapy for cancer, expects full recovery

Georgetown: President David Granger is undergoing chemotherapy in the aftermath of being diagnosed with a cancer that known as Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, government officials confirmed.

President and First Lady just before they departed for Cuba in October.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the lymph system. The major types of lymphoma are Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma can be indolent or aggressive. Age, gender, and a weakened immune system can affect the risk of adult non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

President Granger reportedly began a second round of treatment in Cuba and is not expected to return to Guyana anytime soon.

“Subsequent to a series of medical tests, the President was diagnosed as suffering from Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and was placed in the Centro de Investigaciones Medico Quirurgicas (CIMEQ) on Thursday, November 1, where he underwent a surgical procedure,” Guyana’s Ambassador to Cuba, Halim Majeed said in a statement. “The President’s medical personnel has now begun the second phase of treatment on  November 14, 2018, and he is likely to be placed in CIMEQ for a short period of two to three days.”
The Cuban Envoy said that the President is expected to fully recover and another statement would be issued before the 73 year old Head of State leaves Cuba.

Ambassador Majeed said that the President is in a good frame of mind and working and resting in accordance with the advice he has been receiving from his doctors.
The President, who traveled to Cuba two weeks ago to investigate some health concerns, is expected to remain in Cuba until the completion of his chemotherapy treatment. A timeline for that treatment has not been provided. “Above all, the President would like to publicly thank His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Cuba, the Government of Cuba, and the medical staff of CIMEQ for the special care and attention which he has received while in Havana – and, indeed, for the excellent facilities in which he is being accommodated,” the Cuban Envoy said in a statement.
