Georgetown : President Bharrat Jagdeo along with Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn and Minister of Tourism Industry and Commerce Manniram Prashad met with representatives of the various mini bus routes where the decision was taken to again slash the excise tax on gasoline
Minister Prashad told the media last night, he excise tax has decreased from 20% to 15% so as to allow the gas prices at the pumps to remain under $1000. Diesel has been reduced from 15% to 10%.
Minister Prashad said that at the meeting it was suggested that public transportation be placed under the Public Utilities Commission, so as to give commuters a forum to seek redress, and as a means for the mini bus associations to justify fare increases as it relates to parts and gas prices. Most of the bus owners however, did not agree with this suggestion.
The minister said at the end of the meeting it was agreed that there will be no fare increase.
Minister Prashad said President Jagdeo has mandated that he and Minister Benn meet with the different group to address their issues such as bus associations that are not recognised and are taking fees from bus owners.
He pointed out that the issue of touts on the park will be addressed aggressively by the ranks of the Guyana Police Force.
