Georgetown: The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) says it has noted that after intense lobbying, Guyana has received an extension by the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force, until November to make the necessary amendments to the Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism Legislation so as to avoid our country being blacklisted as a non-cooperating nation.
“However of concern to the PPP is the seeming disappointment by the opposition, specifically the Alliance for Change that our nation was not blacklisted and the reality of our country not being affected by the attending ramifications.” The party noted in a statement. “The Party recalls the initial accusation by the opposition that the particular anti-money laundering amendment was tabled too close to the initial deadline. Hence, they needed more time to have a detailed inspection.”
The PPP further noted that the Alliance for Change had publicly stated on May 15th 2013 that it was ready to support the amendments and pass it before the May 27th deadline, if President Donald Ramotar gave into several of their demands including him signing into law two of A Partnership For National Unity (APNU) unconstitutional motions.
“Nevertheless, the party is happy that President Donald Ramotar has been engaging the opposition on this issue among others and we remain hopeful that the amendments will soon be approved by the National Assembly.”
