President promises more convenience for One mile, Region Ten vendors

Georgetown –  A group of stallholders occupying the One Mile, Wisroc area was promised a more convenient location to engage in their livelihood after a meeting with President Bharrat Jagdeo today.

The group sought an audience with the President after receiving a 14-day notice from the Mayor and Town Council of Linden, Region Ten to remove.
The members however left the Office of the President satisfied after President Jagdeo assured them that there is no intention to rob them of their only means of livelihood.
The 14-day notice was based on the rationale that the stallholders may stand in the way with plans to expand the road through One Mile, Wisroc as heavy traffic traverses mainly from Brazil.
President Jagdeo advised the vendors to halt any plans to extend their stalls as it will be at their risk but said that he will be examining the construction of a mall in future where the stallholders will be relocated.Minister of Public Service Dr Jennifer Westford, Minister of Transport, Hydraulics Robeson Benn and Presidential Advisor on Community Development Odinga Lumumba were also at the meeting.
At present there are approximately 100 stallholders occupying the area many of whom have been retailing for 10 to 15 years.
