Georgetown: President Donald Ramotar Friday headed to the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, to take part in the inauguration ceremony of the Latin American country’s new President, Nicolás Maduro.
He was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett. Heads of Government from CARICOM, the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and other countries are expected to attend.
The President returned to Guyana today.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries have strengthened trade and the resolve of the two countries to address contentious issues in an atmosphere of cordiality.
Guyana is also a beneficiary of the Petrocaribe initiative conceptualised by President Chavez, that allowed signatory nations to benefit from subisdised Venezuelan fuel.
On March 8, Maduro became Venezuela’s acting president, following the death of Chavez, who lost a two-year-long battle with cancer on March 5. Maduro has promised to continue the socialist policies of the former leader.
