Georgetown: The two People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) nominated Commissioners for the Guyana Elections Commission, (GECOM), were sworn in by President David Granger, earlier today.
The Oath of Office was administered to former Public Works Minister, Robeson Benn and Attorney-at-Law, Ms. Bibi Shadick, at the Ministry of the Presidency. The new appointees have replaced, Mohamood Shaw, Athmaram Mangar, and have joined, Commissioner Sase Gunraj, Vincent Alexander, Charles Corbin and Ms. Sandra Jones to serve.
“GECOM is now back up to strength and is capable of discharging its responsibilities, I’m quite sure that you are impressed with the words of the Oath and I’m confident that the commissioners will discharge their duties without fear or favor affection or ill will,” President Granger said in brief remarks following the swearing in.
He said that in his view elections in Guyana are now on a stable footing. “I certainly would like to congratulate the Chairman, Chief Elections Officer and the members of GECOM, over the last two elections… an air of stability has returned to Guyana,” the President added.
However, he noted that while all are impressed with the fact, that Jamaica and Trinidad were able to announce election results in a matter of a few hours after the close of poll, he is sure that Guyana will eventually be able to surmount its challenges in this regard.
“So congratulations and we look forward to the performance of your duties to ensure that we continue to have elections in Guyana, which are credible and which receive the support of the Guyanese People,” President Granger said.
