Prices soar as holiday season kicks in.

Georgetown- The city was packed yesterday with shoppers going until late in the evening. The first sign that it's back to business as usual following the elections and protesters marching through the city streets. Yesterday most of the stores were packed to capacity, as the holiday season picks up momentum. But while the heavy shopping is expected during the next two weeks, prices for certain commodities and basic food have already increased, a usual christmas trend, except this year it's a bit higher. Rice, flour and sugar have increased by up to G $120, while the price for a pound of butter increased by at least G $80. A pint of black eye peas is presently being retailed at G $100, while red beans stand at G $300 per pint.

The price for potatoes remain at two pounds for $100 , onion and garlic G $100 per pound each, channa G $200 per pint, a small bottle of cooking oil four hundred and sixty dollars while milk is retailed at five hundred dollars per pound. Eggs which is one of the big seller during the season has skyrocketed to almost $1100 per tray from $800 and $900. For most shoppers particularly around the market area this is a worrying development.
