Bridgetown.
Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite received their instruments of appointment from Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave at a swearing ceremony at Government House yesterday afternoon.
Stuart, 61, led the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), to a stunning victory over the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) in the wee hours of yesterday morning.
The Prime Minister who was sworn in before an audience that included Clerk of Parliament Pedro Eastmond and Deputy Clerk Nigel Jones did not speak to the press.
Brathwaite told reporters he will be back in his office on Monday morning with the Family Law Act one of the main items on the legislative agenda.
"I am keen on having an amendment to the Family Law Act. That is a priority along with the Cultural Industries Bill which has already been approved by the Cabinet, so there is a lot of work to be done", Brathwaite said.
He also expressed his concerns about the buying of votes during the recent election campaign.
"There are a few things that happen during the course of the campaign that concern me, we need to examine what can be done to ensure that we do not go in the wrong direction as a people", Brathwaite said.
"It really saddens me that the selling of votes have become a part of our landscape. Politicians must send strong signals to the country that this is something that we will not encourage", says Brathwaite.
