Port-of-Spain: Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has announced the establishment of a three-member ministerial committee to review the circumstances that led to the firing of the Chief Executive Officer of the South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) and the industrial relations conflict at the SWRHA.
The announcement was made as the prime minister returned to the country last night from London where she spent a week performing functions in her capacity as chairman of the Commonwealth.
The prime minister is also defending the decision to investigate fully the incident involving the death of 29-year-old Chrystal Ramsoomair on March 4th at the San Fernando General Hospital after childbirth.
There have been calls for the firing of the Minister of Health Therese Baptiste-Cornelis over her actions in this matter. Those calls have come from Medical Professionals Association.
Opposition leader Dr Keith Rowley has also suggested that the minister should fully explain her role in this matter thus far. However the prime minister says the suspension of the doctors and nurses involved should not be seen as an indictment against them. She says the suspensions have also been weighed against the best interest of the public.
The prime minister also made it clear that the ministerial team would serve only to investigate and its findings would then be taken to the Cabinet.
