Georgetown : Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo has pledged Guyana’s support in executing the mandate of the Council of Human and Social Development (COHSOD).
The Prime Minister was at the time addressing the delegates of the 34th COHSOD Meeting at a cocktail reception held at the Baridi Benab, State House last evening.
In brief remarks, Prime Minister Nagamootoo commended the Council for keeping the spirit of Article 17, of the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramus, alive. He noted that this has been achieved through improved healthcare in the Caribbean; development of education through technical training; coordinated policies and programmes to improve the living and working conditions and the development of women and youths in the region.
The Prime Minister also noted that, Guyana has made significant progress as a result of the systematic implementation of a range of initiatives proposed by the council,
“Our students have universal access to education and more recent, by a programmatic response to Special Education Needs. They are exposed to Technical and Vocational Training at the various levels of the Caribbean Vocational Qualification; Schools are Child-Friendly, and teacher training is enhanced. School support programmes are enhanced in areas of Health & Nutrition, HIV & AIDS, Guidance and Counselling. .Gender and engagement disparities are reduced and we have established good working relations with the various stakeholders nationally.”
Also attending the event was First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, wife of PM, Mrs. Sita Nagamootoo, Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry and members of the Diplomatic Corp among other special invitees.
The 34th meeting of COHSOD opened today at the Theatre Guild under the theme: Positioning Human Resource Development as Central to Caribbean Resilience and Development. The forum that runs until May 4 and set to discuss the approval of a Regional Action Plan (2018 – 2020) for the Human Resource Development (HRD) 2030 Strategy and forging an agreement on arrangements for the monitoring and evaluation at both regional and national levels of implementation.
