Berbice : New Amsterdam Policeare investigating the death of convicted prison Melvin Smart whowas found dead in his cell yesterday.
According to the Guyana Prison Service, prisoner Smart, who was the lone occupation of a cell, was unlocked at approximately 6:45am to do his ablutions. He returned to his cell and shortly after, the supervising rank on duty was alerted by other prisoners as to some unusual noise coming from the cell of prisoner Smart.The rank immediately rushed to the cell and observed that the prisoner was hanging from a piece of clothin his cell. He was immediately cut down. The medical Officer was summoned and recognized that the prisoner was not breathing.The police were immediately summoned to investigate the matter.
Prisoner Smart was admitted to the New Amsterdam Prison on July 31,2012 convicted to serve six months imprisonment for the offence “Unlawful and malicious damage to property”. He was due to be discharged from prison December this year.
He was 24 years old and resided at No I village Corentyne. He was classified as an Emotionally Disturbed Person (EPD).
