A male prisoner was killed and several police officers were injured during a riot at the Mandeville Police Lock Up yesterday.
According to a police official, the riot started just after midday when prisoners where being taken from the jail to the court.
Two police officers including a woman sergeant tried to calm the situation but were attacked and beaten by the prisoners.
After the confrontation, all the injured were taken to the hospital where the prisoner died and the injured police officers admitted.
The identity of the prisoner who died was being withheld up to late last night, to allow the police to inform his relatives.
One policemen is said to be seriously injured after being hit repeatedly in the face and head with a baton by one of the prisoners.
