Prisons Commissioner under fire by Association

Arouca: Accusations of conspiracy and backstabbing are being leveled against Prisons Commissioner John Rougier as the Prison Officers Association claims he is using the Public Service Commission to advance his own promotion system.

Association President Rajkumar Ramroop is calling on the prime minister to remove Rougier and for the Public Service Commission to be investigated.

Ramroop claims that the commissioner is attempting to frustrate and alienate officers of the service by manipulating the Public Service Commission to advance a promotion system that was not agreed upon by prison officers.

Ramroop says the association only became aware of the issue after the commission wrote to them indicating that the prisons commissioner had stepped in.

He believes it constitutes an abuse of power

He says the Commissioner's interference with the promotions system threatens the area most important to prison officers, that of upward mobility within the service.

He feels the time has come for the Prison Service to be removed from the jurisdiction of the Public Service Commission and says the Prison Officers Association will also be writing to the Equal Opportunities Commission as they intend to fight Commissioner Rougier's proposal to the PSC.
