Georgetown – The Ministry of Education has embarked on a plan to implement strategies to further integrate private education institutions into the national education network.
This has seen a two-day workshop being hosted for heads of private teaching institutions by the Planning Unit of the Ministry so as to enhance record-keeping and data management in the education system.
Minister of Education,Shaik Baksh reiterated the need for there to be a holistic view of the education system in Guyana, one which encompasses both public and private institutions.
The Minister stated that of the 86 private institutions, only 27 are formally recognised and approved by theMinistry of Education.
He noted that approval will not be granted if the Ministry if not genuinely satisfied that the conditions, as set out, are met. He further pointed out that if the requirements are not met, the institution will be granted six months for compliance.
The Minister noted that the draft of the legislation has been completed; as the Ministry has completed its work and the next step towards it being passed by the National Assembly is being looked at currently.
Acknowledging that some of these institutions have been following the curriculum, the Minister stated that those that are not, should be following the national guideline, as well as comply with the non-academic standards.
