Georgetown: The University of Guyana (UG) is involved in ongoing discussion with the University of the West Indies (UWI) on the revised draft of the collaborative agreement for the continued automatic admission of graduates of the UG Law Programme into the Hugh Wooding Law School.
Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Basil Williams told the media today that a progress report of the collaborative legal agreement among the UG and the UWI, and the Council of Legal Education (CLE) is expected to be delivered at CLE’s 48th meeting.
The meeting which will be held in Antigua and Barbuda, September 1-4, will on September 1, see the Special Meeting of the Executive and on September 2, the meeting of the CLE, during which the reported is expected to presented, the AG said.
The revision of the collaborative legal agreement between UG and UWI became necessary in 2015, since the previous agreement entered into had come to an end through the passage of time.
Negotiations, between the government and UG with several members of CLE/UWI team in 2015 resulted in revision to the agreement, including the decision to retain the quota of 25 automatic admissions into Hugh Wooding for Guyanese graduates from UG, and the securing of an additional 10 places for non-Guyanese nationals who were graduates of the said law programme.
The agreement which was being drafted by UG and UWI was expected to be signed and taken to the CLE for their signature, before September 2015; however, it is yet to be signed.
Also on the agenda of the Meeting of the CLE will be the elections for the position of Chairman, as well as members of the Executive Committee.
