Chief Medical Officer Dr Joy St John says there are significant gaps in proper handingand mangment of medical waste on the island but efforts are being made by the Ministry of Health to correct the problem.
St John said safe management of waste in the health care sector must be given priority by the civil service and business houses on the island.
Stressing that waste generated by health care activities includes a wide range of materials from used syringes to soiled dressing, body parts and bodily fluids such as blood, St John acknowledged that there are significant gaps in the proper management of such waste.
She was delivering the opening address at the Medical Waste Management Seminar held for employees of the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies.
