Protest erupts in Berbice over the killing of two teens

Georgetown: The mangled bodies of two teenagers were found in the Cotton Tree backdam, West Coast Berbice on Sunday afternoon after they were reported missing on Saturday.

Dead: Isaiah and Joel Henry

The teens were identified as Isaiah Henry, 16 and Joel Henry, 19, of Number 3 Village, West Coast Berbice.

They were last seen alive on Saturday when they left to go into the backdam to pick coconuts. Family members became worried after the teens did not return home on Saturday night and searches were launched.

The bodies of the youths were discovered with chop wounds about their bodies, including to their faces and as the horrendous news spread scores of residents came out in their numbers to express their disbelief.

Residents of Number Three, Four and Five Villages on the West Coast of Berbice have blocked the roads and set tyres on fire in protest against the gruesome murders.

Isaiah’s father Gladstone Henry said “they chopped him up cruel; there was an X on his face. His cousin was chopped several times and entire chest was open. This wasn’t normal. We want justice for these boys”.

The bodies were brought out from the backdam at around 18:30h on Sunday.

Angry villagers believe the teens might have been attacked by farmers or other persons in the Cotton Tree area and brutally murdered in the Backdam.
