Pt. Reepu Persaud will be missed for his great work-President

IMG-20130409-00023Georgetown: President Donald Ramotar said Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud’s will be remembered for his long-serving contribution to politics, religion and culture in Guyana.

The President was among hundreds of people from all walks of life last evening at the late pandit’s residents where the wake is being held.

A stalwart of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) for 58 years, who was active in the independent struggle for Guyana, was a visionary, President Ramotar said.

As a strong devotee in the Hindu fait, Pandit Reepu as he is commonly known was regarded one that has kept culture alive in a society where religious diversity exists among the masses.

“The depth of his contribution is immeasurable and we will forever miss him for the great work that he has done,” President Ramotar said.

Chairman of Demerara Distillers Limited and Demerara Bank Dr. Yesu Persaud spoke of the days when he and Pandit Reepu grew up on the same sugar plantation and lived in logees (small mud house). He also spoke of the contribution the pandit made to upkeep the Hindu religion in Guyana

IMG-20130409-00018.Several prominent singers including Mohan Nandu, Basdeo Sanchara, Ramkissoon Singh, Pandit Jagmohan, Sukrani Boodhoo were part of the wake programme.

The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha founder Pandit Reepu was conferred the Order of Roraima, Guyana’s second highest National Award in 1996. He died at 77 on the morning of April 7. His funeral will take place tomorrow with a procession from the Dharmic Sanskritik Kendra in Prashad Nagar to the Guyana International Conference Centre (GICC) with a stopover at Freedom House and other locations.

The GICC will be the venue for the official ceremony and viewing of the body.
