West Dem.- It is a welcomed and commendable trend happening in most communities of late, citizens coming to the aid of victims and pursuing criminals. The latest attack happened yesterday on the Pouderoyen public road West Coast Demereara, when two bandits were pursued and beaten by community residents The duo followed 25 year old Clint Gunput and his wife in the same minibus from Georgetown all the way to their village. After exiting the bus, the victim was stabbed and relieved of a gold chain as the duo managed to escape in the same bus for a short while. Residents in area rushed to the victim's aid and others on motorcycles gave chase until they managed to stop the bus and pulled the bandits out. They probably would have been beaten to death had it not been for a senior officer in the force who resides in the area. She came out and ordered that the bandits be taken into custody and stopped the residents from beating them.
Days ago, a man identified as Jerry who sells Bam on his bicycle, was beaten and killed by Sophia residents after he was fingered in the brutal death of a shopkeeper and the critical wounding of her husband. These two cases are among many as police continue to caution not to take the law into their hands. But in some quarters, this vigilante justice is being welcomed since residents are wary of the continued attacks by criminals.
