Rain to persist during the next 5 days with serious flood advisory in effect.

Georgetown– The continuous rainfall which descended within the last 48 hours is expected to last until the next two weeks. Rainfall to date is between 25.0mm and 60.0mm. Most of the city and and along the coastal areas are flooded with water level in the trenches and conservancy rising rapidly. Since the start of the year city workers and the Ministry of Works embarked on a wide spread cleaning and clearing exercise, which saw the desilting of main canals and debris removal in key outfall channels. The effects of this are clearly being seen with the effective drainage of the city once the rain stops. However, the drainage and irrigation department was not prepared for the current downpour which is already in it's second day and no sign of stopping. The Hydromet office shows the forecast commencing 07:00 hours Monday,21st February, 2011. Mainly cloudy conditions can be expected with intermittent rain fall and outburst of thunder at times. Georgetown is expected to be partly cloudy to cloudy skies with showers.

The rain also affected schools in the city as the Ministry sent out a warning about possible flooding. Parents were forced to uplift their children just after noon today. Some of the classrooms at several schools have already been inundated.
