Berbice: As public schools across Guyana reopened their doors for the new school term on Monday, a team from the Regional Democratic Council, Region Five (Mahaica/Berbice) visited a number of schools in that region to assess their physical conditions.
A release from the regional administration stated that Regional Chairman, Bindrabhan Bisnauth, Deputy Regional Executive Officer, Govind Singh, and Regional Education Officer, Owen Pollard, visited a number of schools in the Mahaica/Mahaicony areas.
The release further stated that approximately 94 percent of teachers at the schools visited reported for duty, while student turnout was 72 percent.
The team listened to the concerns of head teachers and offered solutions to their problems.
Meanwhile, elected councillors and senior regional officials have embarked on a series of consultations in communities throughout the region. “Apart from the coastal communities, we intend to visit as far up the Mahaicony as Moraikobai, which is about 90 miles away from the coastland,” the release stated.
The team has been divided into two groups and the visits and consultations are continuing on a daily basis. The groups comprise Bisnauth, Regional Vice Chairman, Riyon Peters, Regional Executive Officer (REO) Ashford Ambikar, Deputy Regional Executive Officer, Govind Singh, Regional Engineer, Mark Gupta, and senior staffers of the Education Department.
