Reckless behaviour on the road

 Insurance companies have expressed their concern  about the rising number of motorcycle collisions and the number of young people involved in accidents.

According to the figures for  2012, there were 27 road deaths, five of them involving motorcyclists. For the first three months of the year, there have been two deaths as a result of accidents involving motorcycles.

Chairman of the General Insurance Association of Barbados (GIAB) Anton Lovell told Trakker News that the body his very concern about the reckless behaviour on the roads.

"The body is not only concerned about the number of motorcycle accidents. We are concerned about the number of uninsured motorcycles on the roads and the reckless behaviour of cyclists", Lovell said. 

He stated that the GIAB and the insurance companies were spending thousand of dollars each on road safety messages and were not getting through.

Lovell said the next move is to introduce a programme in seconday and tertiary institutions giving young people driving tips.
