Red Carpet Premiere for President’s film project

Georgetown: President Bharrat Jagdeo is expected to perform the symbolic lifting of the curtain in July for a red carpet premiere of the President’s Film Endowment Project 2011, marking the beginning of a venture to stimulate a film making industry in Guyana.

The initiative stemmed from a meeting with stakeholders in the local arts and entertainment industry in November last year where a small grant of $10M was committed to encourage film making in Guyana.

At that meeting Director of the Centre for Communication Studies at the University of Guyana (UG) Dr. Paloma Mohamed was appointed to manage the project which was titled the President’s Film Endowment Project 2011.

President Jagdeo explained the genesis and broad objective of the venture while being interviewed by a team of final year UG students who were at the time
Asked about the benefits of such a project, President Jagdeo said they are tremendous for the promotion of the Guyanese culture and the revival of the “true Guyanese identity.
“The more we do to stimulate the arts, we can help to forge a stronger sense of who we are and I hope by the portrayal of the real-life situation here in Guyana and through the creative talent, fiction etc, that this would only help to support that process of the creation of a national identity,” President Jagdeo said.
