St. John’s, Antigua: Travellers from Antigua to Barbados will have another alternative starting this summer when REDjet begins flying between those two countries, the Observer reported.
The low cost carrier, yesterday, announced intention to begin the service from June 6 with a promotional fare of US $16.99 going on sale this Wednesday. This development comes almost four months after the inaugural Antigua to Guyana flight.
The Observer stated that Communications Executive, Nyssa Pierre, said that REDjet will fly twice a week from St John’s to Bridgetown with same-day return service. She added that after the initial hiccoughs the airline is receiving permission for routes much more quickly. “All the key players involved recognise the importance of REDjet and its low fares…Barbados alone has seen significantly increased traffic from Guyana and Trinidad. It only serves to the betterment of the countries, whether it is tourist dollars, or just traffic into one’s country”, Pierre said.
REDjet’s upcoming service on the Barbados/Antigua route is very significant since LIAT, which many travellers have complained is too expensive, would have been the main carrier bridging the northern and southern Caribbean.
But even as the travelling public welcomes REDjet’s ninth route in the region, there is also concern that the airline is expanding too rapidly and will meet the demise of companies which have tried to compete with the longer established LIAT. Earlier this month St Maarten joined St Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, Guyana and Jamaica as destinations serviced by the budget carrier, the Observer reported.
