Region 10: As part of the Government’s Hinterland Electrification Programme, Amerindian villages of Wiruni, Kimbia and Hururu located along the Berbice River in Region Ten yesterday received solar panels.
Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development Norman Whittaker who handed over the units, said that they form part of government’s efforts to bring relief and support to the Amerindian communities that do not enjoy electricity.
He indicated that the presentation of the solar panels will facilitate a boost in the delivery of education and health services in the beneficiary areas as it hoped that students of the schools will utilise it to complete homework, whilst the community health workers will be able to treat
patients at night.
Anthony King, Toshao of Wiruni Village, thanked the minister and his ministry for the support and opined that residents of the community will bond closer, noting this new development.
Wiruni’s Community Health Worker, Anita Archer said that the solar panel will help her to execute her duties in a more efficient manner as the absence of proper lighting at night results in patients not receiving the best of treatment.
