Berbice: Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, Saturday endorsed that Region 5 (West Berbice) has great potential and the capacity to survive on their own. The Prime Minister was at the time delivering remarks at the opening ceremony of the Region 5 Expo and Trade Fair held at the Bath Settlement Community Centre Ground. Also attending the ceremony was Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin and Mrs Sita Nagamootoo. The trade fair is being hosted for the first time in the Region by the Chamber of Commerce under the theme “Transforming Region Five for a better Guyana”. It is the hope that the trade fair will enable the businesses in Region 5 to showcase their products and services so as to create and retain economic activities in Berbice. Prime Minister Nagamootoo noted that Region 5 is one of the largest producers of rice and vegetables, but lacking within the region are Agro-processing industries. He related that during his recent visit to the Rupununi he was presented with a tub of peanut butter produced right in the Rupununi. He urged the residents to let this example be an ‘eye opener’ as to the possibilities and opportunities that are available. It is the Prime Minister’s hope that with the budgetary allocations to the Region in the 2016 Budget, “we will be able to see such industries take strides.” He explained that some $2.6B has been allocated to the region where part of this allocation can be utilized for the development of such industries. “You can do better, you have the potential for further development” Prime Minister Nagamootoo stressed.
