Release of Bakr caused upsurge in crime, says former minister

Port of Spain: As the Commission of Enquiry into the attempted coup of 1990 continues, a former health minister says releasing the insurgents was a big mistake.

Emmanuel Hosein told commissioners today the release of Abu Bakr and his 115 rebels sent the wrong message to the nation in particular the criminals in the country.

He said since then lawbreakers have been embolden in committing their crimes and the country has been experiencing a level of violence that has been unprecedented.
