Renewable energy remains vital in Guyana’s developmental thrust – Dr. Roger Luncheon

Georgetown : Cabinet’s meeting on January 24th examines the developments surrounding the Amaila Falls Hydro power project.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS) Dr. Roger Luncheon made this disclosure at his post-Cabinet media briefing at the Office of the President.
"Cabinet’s position on the Amaila Falls hydropower and its implementation remains undaunted by the representations, much of it half-produced, misinformed and under-informed in the press … making the role of renewable energy …misrepresented or not fully understood by the public,” Dr. Luncheon stated.
Important consideration was also given to the inputs arising from the resolution of the global climate change imperative within the context of the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) and the financing of climate change mitigation and adaptation.
The HPS assured that construction of the Amaila Falls access road will continue “notwithstanding what has been described in some parts of the media as a fall out between the Government and Synergy.
According to Dr. Luncheon the commitment to financial closure remains strong on the basis of the most recent meeting with the CEO of Sithe Global Bruce Wrobel and President Donald Ramotar.
He stressed the need to publicise the obvious benefits of the project to the economy especially with regards to the cost of energy in Guyana.
Cabinet also reaffirmed its support to continued outreach with stakeholders to ensure the implementation of the project.
On January 24, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Sithe Global, Bruce Wrobel, and Senior Vice-Presidents, James McGowan and Brian Kubeck met with President Donald Ramotar for the first time since he took Office to discuss the way forward with regards to the Amaila Falls Hydro Project (AFHP).
After the meeting Wrobel stated his company is very encouraged by the steps that are being taken to see the completion of the access road so that construction of the hydro can commence in a few months.
