Georgetown: President David Granger joined with thousands of Guyanese at the D’Urban Park to witness the 48th Republic Anniversary Flag Raising Ceremony. The event featured a cultural presentation, which celebrated our people, our way of life and our national patrimony. This was followed by a military parade and the highlight of the evening; the hoisting of the Golden Arrowhead on the 180 foot flagpole at midnight, followed by the traditional fireworks display put on by the Guyana Defence Force.
First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, the Foreign Affairs Minister, who is currently performing the functions of Prime Minister, Mr. Carl Greenidge, Government Ministers and members of the diplomatic corps were among those, who gathered to witness the event. This year, Republic Day is being celebrated under the theme “Let’s Cooperate and Celebrate Republic 48.” Guyana became a Republic on February 23, 1970.
