Georgetown: Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, fielding questions at a recent post-Cabinet briefing, indicated that Dr. Verasammy Ramaya’s appointment as Regional Executive Officer for Region Six, is a move by the Administration to ensure that the right people are in the right places, to deliver ‘quality of service’ to the citizenry, and that it is in keeping with Government’s investment.
He said that because of the sums of money Government intends to spend in that region, coupled with the fact that there is a very narrow window to provide a certain level of service between now and December, along with reports on the award of contracts, which are being investigated, the Administration did not want someone who would affect the flow of resources via a position in office.
“Since we took office, we have been looking at all the REOs. You will see changes even in areas where we won the elections, because we are looking for a quality of service at that level that is standard all around, that we can be guaranteed that when resources are placed at the disposal of the RDCs, that they make decisions and resolutions for the utilization of these resources, and we do not have REOs, who take them on their own, and make decisions that are contrary to those which are made by the elected Councils,” Minister Harmon explained.
According to Harmon, the current Regional Chairman, David Armogan, has committed himself to governing in the interest of all people, therefore the Administration believes that both Mr. Armogan and Dr. Ramaya will do well for the people of Berbice and the people will get a higher level of service and quality of goods and services being delivered to the region.
Minister Harmon also indicated that the position of REO has always been a quasi-political appointment.
