Berbice: Richard “110” Barrow, who along with another man, carried out a daring robbery on Ram’s Jewellery World, on Tuesday escaped from police custody yesterday. A third man, Sherwin Adams, is also wanted for the crime.
Barrow is wanted for questioning in relation to robbery under arms and escape from lawful custody, while Adams is wanted for questioning in relation to robbery under arms, police said in a bulletin. Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the two men is asked to contact the police on phone numbers: 227-1149, 226-1326, 226-6978, 226-7065, 225-6411, 911 or at the nearest police station. Barrow’s last known address is said to be Lot 75 Mocha Arcadia, East Bank Demerara, while Adams known as ‘Quarters’ resides at Lot 97 Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown. Barrow, also known as Hensu, has been linked to at least 12 robberies across Berbice. Barrow, who was arrested on Thursday at Mon Repos following a massive manhunt which was launched after the jewellery store robbery, was being escorted to the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam when he escaped.
Barrow and Mark Lee Young, 36, had robbed the proprietress of the Ram’s Jewellery World, Chandroutie Ram and her son, Besham of $15 million worth of jewellery.
Young was arrested after he was spotted hanging to the chain of a pontoon of the Berbice River Bridge.
Several senior ranks at Central Police Station expressed the opinion that gross carelessness led to the escape. Around 07:25hrs on Friday, the Corporal in charge ordered that the lock-up holding Barrow and other prisoners be emptied for cleaning. So, Barrow was subsequently escorted to take a shower behind the lock-up from where he escaped.
The Corporal and the Constable who Barrow fled from have since been under close arrest. Detectives up to late Friday were investigating and taking statements from ranks and prisoners present at the station when the incident occurred.
