Georgetown: Thousands are expected to attend the annual Rupununi Rodeo in Lethem, which begins today. The day time activities will include wild-bull riding, horse racing, wild-cow milking, a female barrel race and steer roping.
The evening programme will take the form of a cultural fair, with food, games music and the lively ‘Fawhaw’ dance. The Tourism Ministry has collaborated with several operators to offer tour packages for the rodeo.
A 23 member delegation from Suriname, as well as persons from Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica and Dubai are attending the event.
The initiative was launched to provide the opportunity for citizens, businesses, organizations and tourists to discover the tourism opportunities.
Tourism Minister, Irfaan Ali, said the 2013 rodeo will also include an overland excursion, which consists of over 150 persons, 70 of whom are Guyanese and the others from Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica and Dubai.
Minister Ali acknowledged that the trip is part of his ministry’s efforts to promote regional and local tourism. The ministry welcomed the Surinamese delegation by presenting them with bags and hats as tokens.
