Second license plate now approved for BVI taxi drivers

British Virgin Islands: Taxi drivers in the BVI are now allowed to have a second license plate, the BVInews.com reported.

This was one of the concerns expressed by taxi drivers to Minister of Communications and Works Mark Vanterpool in January and this is now fixed.

Speaking to taxi drivers and livery operators in a meeting last evening on the decisions taken by Government, Minister Vanterpool outlined a number of initiatives.

“I have exercised my decision-making authority as Minister for Communications and Works after informing cabinet to have a second plate issued to current holders of taxi licenses. The Department of Motor Vehicles has been informed and is ready to facilitate this process beginning at 9 tomorrow (today) morning,” the Minister said.

The BVInews.com report stated that the Minister also said the Taxi and Livery Commission is now in the process of finalizing recommendations to the Ministry of Communications and Works on the issuance of new licenses.

“They along with the Commissioner will be proposing a basis or criteria on which licenses will be issued and a recommended amount of licenses to be issued over a period of time without flooding the market to speak. It is anticipated that this recommendation will be shortly received,” Vanterpool said, according to the BVInews.com report.
