Georgetown : Cabinet has approved for 19 members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to undergo a series of training in the Republic of China, to further strengthen and build the force’s capacity.
This was disclosed by Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman during a post- Cabinet press briefing , at the Ministry of the Presidency.
Minister Trotman said that the ranks will be attending a seminar on ‘Public Order Maintenance’ under China’s bilateral training programme. “The training aims at developing and strengthening capacity building in the security sector of Guyana,” the Minister stated.
Minister Trotman noted that the Government of Guyana is grateful for the opportunity given to the ranks since it is an all-expenses paid training being provided by the Government of China. “The Chinese Government thankfully will provide air fares, accommodations, meals, training fees, free visas and local transportation for participants and we are very grateful for this opportunity,” the Minister said.
The 19 police officers attending the seminar are Assistant Superintendent (ASP) Anthony Austin, (ASP) Otis Garraway, (ASP) Antonio Fedricks,(ASP) Omisha Arjune, Inspector Michael Grant, Inspector Christopher Humphrey, Sergeant Gavin Boyce, Sergeant Trevor Benn, Sergeant David Mc Pherson, Sergeant Michael Hauth, Corporal Nankumar Dallo, Corporal Khemraj Chan, Corporal Nafesty Morris, Corporal Chevon Marks, Corporal Michael Clarke, Corporal Dion Paris, Corporal Amernauth Rabindranauth, Corporal Winston Williams and constable Navindra Jagnarine.
Additionally, Minister Trotman reported that eight other police officers will be heading off to participate in a human rights course in San Salvador. The Minister noted that the course is an invitational one by the United States of America and will go from May 30 to June 3, 2016.
Those delegated to attend are ASP Rohit Kisson, ASP Fidella Boyce, ASP Germaine Grant, ASP Khemraj Shivbaran, ASP Joseph Jack, Inspector Bharrat Persaud, Inspector Michael Newland and female inspector Yonette Steven.
The GPF continues to build capacity. In January 2016, the Ministry of Public Security launched a US$15M Citizen Security Strengthening Programme (CSSP). The sum of US$5.5M was allocated for Crime Prevention and Investigation.The project is financing an evidence-based crime preventing policing model at the national level, which includes IT improvements, police training, and specialisation in evidence-based policing.
