Bridgetown.
The Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) will be placing a security flyer in every room of its members in an attempt to reduce visitors becoming the victims of crime.
President of the BHTA Patrica Affonso-Dass told Trakker News that some tourists who were robbed recently indicated that they will not return to Barbados.
According to Affonso-Dass the effect on the cash for gold business on the tourism industry and ways in which the security of visitors to the island can be improved will be a major topic at the BHTA's meeting later this month. Affonso -Dass there are no plans to issue an official advisory to visitors.
Instead, the BHTA will re-launch a flyer which highlights a number of safety and security issue that guests should be aware of while on the island, and tips on how to safeguard their person and property.
"The wording for the flyer will be updated and amended to address the current issues, and members will be asked to place them in guest rooms. The ideal is to ensure that the information is clearly and accurately provided and that guests are properly informed", Affonso-Dass said.
"Additionally, we will be advising that when speaking to guests in orientations and in general settings, staff should be reinforcing the information provided on the flyer Affonso-Dass added.
The decision to place greater emphasis on the safety of tourists follows a series of attacks on Barbadians and visitors believed to be fuelled by the cash for gold trade on the island.
Earlier this week, the Royal Barbados Police Force advised Barbadians to be careful when wearing jewellry in public.
