Bridgetown.
A senior police officer is not sure whether the current recession has been a major contributor to crime in Barbados.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Erwin Boyce, in an address to participants attending a seminar titled "Violence As A Concept, Individual, Family and Community held by the Urban Development Commission, there was still a problem with the cash for gold market.
According to Boyce even though selling gold for cash is legal, it can influence wrong behaviours:"Some people can snatch your gold and sell it to make quick money. There is also a problem where people are stealing scrap metal and copper from various places across the island", Boyce said.
Boyce told the particpants the rise in gun violence was alarming:"Guns in Barbados are in the wrong hands but violent behaviour is preventable and we must continue to focus on community policing and set up crime fighting programmes. We must be proactive", he added.
