Setback for sugar crop

Bridgetown.

Several acres of ripe cane at the Christ Church Planation close to the Grantley Adams Airport were destroyed by fire late last week, signalling some early losses to the  sugar industry.

It is not kind of the start the industry can afford given the pressures the sector the industry has been experiencing in recent times.

No date has been set for start of the crop but a source at the Barbados Agricultural Magagement  Company told Trakker News the proposed start for the harvesting of the crop is early February.

The source said a early start in February is aimed at ensuring the harvesting of the cerop would be competed by the start of the rainy season.
