Bridgetown.
Seven workers, not twenty were sacked by Diamonds International on Tuesday during a address to the May Day rally at Browne's Beach, General Secretary of the Barbados Worker Union (BWU) Sir Roy Trotman, accused the management of the jewellery store of firing 20 employees prior to a union meeting.
Attorney at law Alair Shepherd told Trakker News, "I am in a position to confirm that no 20 people were fired and the seven whose services were terminated were dismissed on legal advice and on the recommendation of their suspervisors".
Shepherd added the dismissals were prior to the union meeting and Sir Roy is not correct to say the seven workers were dismissed because they attended a meeting with the BWU.
Sir Roy had called the dismissals reprehensible and had urged all employers, especially Barbadian ones, to tell these foreign people that this is not Syria, this is not Damascus, this is not Libya.
The veteran trade union leader had called Jacob Hassid, the managing director of Diamonds International, an "Egyptian Jew" and had threatened strike action over what he called an act of unfair dismissal.
Shepherd said that Hassid was unhappy with Sir Roy's reference to him as an Egyptian Jew and deplored the fact that anyone could be single out by race or religion to make them feel uncomfortable.
