Sharp rise in the use of guns

Bridgetown.

Guns are the becoming the weapon of choice of violent offences in Barbados, this was disclosed yesterday by Kim Ramsay, senior research officer of the National Task Force on Crime yesterday at a National Consultation on Violence at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

Ramsay stated while the murder rate have been a steady increase since 1997, she added the 662 murders committed in the past 30 years were relatively low when compared with other countries.

She  told the audience which included magistrates, represenatives of Government departments and NGOs, that more than 90 percent of the murders were committed by males.

Ramsay lamented the frivolous reasons young people were using  to kill each other.

"I have talked about the person who killed the victim over a shot of alcohol.I remember conducting research where the victim was murdered because he did not give a man the score in a domino game", Ramsay said.
