Shotgun, rifle and ammunition found

Caroni: Military personnel have discovered a large cache of guns and ammunition in Caroni after an anonymous tip off. The weapons and ammunition were found in a red and black duffel bag covered over with plastic in a bushy area close to the roadway.

The weapons were put on display at the Office of the Prime Minister during the daily State of Emergency breifing that followed the post Cabinet media conference.

They were found at Herrera Road, off the Caroni South Bank Road in a bushy area close to the roadway.

The bag contained several rounds of ammunition, one 12-gauge shotgun and a 1.22 riffle. In addition the officers also found 25 rounds of 12-gauge cartridges with one spent shell, 125 rounds of  7.62 ammunition, 14 rounds of .45 ammunition, 63 rounds of .9 mm ammunition, one round of  5.56 ammunition, one 9 mm magazine, 20 rounds of .77 mm ammunition, 31 rounds of 5.58 ammunition and 110 rounds of .22 ammunition.

Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Kenrick Maharaj says it's a sign of things to come. The brigadier says the the military will continue investigations on who owned the weapons.

Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs says this find brings to over 200, the number of weapons seized since the State of Emergency was implemented.

National Security Minister Brigadier John Sandy says that while the protective services continue to clean up the country of weapons, they are also continuing their efforts to ensure that no more weapons come into the country across the maritime borders.
