Georgetown: The Gaming Authority on Monday granted, Sleepin Hotel Carnival Casino, employing 300 persons ending a six-year long wait, proprietor Clifton Bacchus confirmed.
The doors of the Church Street, Georgetown Casino opened on Tuesday and Bacchus noted that the investment in the hotel and casino amounted to US$8M.
However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the first batch of 150 persons will be taken on board.
He added that costs escalated about another US$1 million due to the need to reimport equipment, paying for licences that had not been granted and the maintenance of the building.
Expressing his relief at the decision by the Gaming Authority, Bacchus said after spending GYD$18M in paying upfront fees over the years, legal action that was taken against the Authority will now be dropped since he received his licence.
In December 2019, after a three-year-long battle before the High Court, Justice Fidela Corbin had ordered that the Gaming Authority process and consider the application of Sleep-In International Hotel.
The five-member Gaming Authority was appointed about one month after the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) was declared the winner of the March 2, 2020 general elections.
They are Manniram Prashad- Chairman of the Board; Ms. Abena Moore- Director; Sase Gunraj-Director; Genevieve Blackman-Director and Mark Conway- Director.
