Spanish, Venezuelan appear in court as illegal immigrants

Port-of-Spain: A Spanish national identified as Antero Corradad and a Venezuelan national Alexis Gutierez have appeared before magistrate Marcia Murray, charged with being in the country illegally and having illegal passports.

Gutierez was also charged for breaching a deportation order as he was held and deported sometime before. Both men pleaded guilty and were fined $10,000 and $21,000 to be paid forthwith.

In default they will serve 18 and six weeks imprisonment, following which they will be handed over to immigration authorities for deportation. The men were held in a police exercise as part of the State of Emergency in Cocorite last week.

Police are still trying to determine if the men have any links to a drug lord. The men told the court they were in Trinidad to seek a better life.
