Berbice : The need for disciplined youths was emphasised by President Donald Ramotar last evening when he formally handed over a multi-million dollar basketball court to Ithaca Village, West Bank Berbice.
Speaking to the community’s youths, President Ramotar said that in addition to promoting physical fitness and well-being, sports also promote discipline amongst the younger generation. “For young people, it teaches a lot of life skills because in sport itself, you have rules and you have to play according to the rules. And if you violate the rules, you’re punished. You have penalties to pay because of these violations of the rules”.
These same principles apply to the rules of society, the president noted. “We live in organised societies. Societies have got rules, got laws and regulations and therefore people are expected to live within those laws and to make a contribution in that regards and sports is one of the early things that can train the mind to useful and disciplined citizens in the society”.
President Ramotar said the Government has long recognised the need to build the human capital, adding that sports, makes an important contribution in this regard. He added that sports also keeps persons fit and once they’re fit, it is expected that their minds will also be mentally alert. “For young people who are studying in the various disciplines, it is expected that you would be able to learn more and grasp the new professions and new education and so forth that you want to develop in”.
