St. Kitts unemployment level on the increase

St. Kitts: Unemployment levels in St. Kitts has been on the rise since the closure of Reeds Data Service Ltd. at the end of 2010, which resulted in over 120 workers exiting the work force, and the recent closure of another call center including layoffs at a number of businesses have added to the increase, according to a report in the St. Kitts Nevis Observer. In addition to this, hotels and other companies across the island have made cutbacks on a smaller scale.

Minister Harris explained that with significant cutbacks being made in the manufacturing industry, that sector will be negatively affected.

Currently St. Kitts-Nevis is negotiating a trade agreement- the Guyana- Brazil Partial Scope Agreement- which would give the Federation preferential access to the Brazilian market.

Once the Federation successfully accedes to the Guyana –Brazil Partial Scope Agreement St. Kitts and Nevis would be strategically positioned to engage in export trade of products manufactured at the C.A. Paul Southwell Industrial Development in Basseterre and Bourkes Industrial Estates in Sandy Point. Such a trade arrangement would be extremely beneficial to the local economy and could increase job availability, Minister Harris said.
